I ordered by my shoe size and they are comfortable with a medium weight sock over a fine sock. I added the medium weight sock because my toes were cold. I have been walking through muddy forest trails several times and they are great--haven't lost one yet to deep sucking mud! Fit is snug but not tight over upper calf. No slipping in the mud, although I don't expect to wear them through snow or on ice.
